Nick Mason: Mountain PhotographerNick Mason is a medically qualified photographer and mountaineer based in Cardiff, UK. Nick has always taken a camera with him into the mountains. Initially this was to record the places he visited and the routes he climbed, but increasingly photography became a creative response to the beauty of the mountain environment and an end in its own right. The quality of Nick’s photography was recognised by his appointment as one of Olympus Cameras’ Top Photographers. In addition to photography, Nick works as a Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine and is a recognised expert in high altitude medicine. Nick is a UK representative for the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), which works to improve the well being of mountain porters throughout the world, and has twice worked at the IPPG rescue post at Machermo in the Gokyo Valley of Nepal. Nick is currently undertaking a major project to photograph the lives of the mountain porters of Nepal and to highlight the appalling conditions under which these proud but vulnerable people struggle to earn a living. Nick is available for commissions and special projects where he offers the unique blend of his photographic skills combined with the longstanding experience of providing medical care in remote and high altitude environments. EquipmentNick writes: 'I have been using Olympus equipment since switching to digital capture 6 years ago. The remote mountain and high altitude environments in which many of my pictures are taken place great demands on a camera system. The combination of the excellent ergonomics, weather sealing and unfailing reliability of the Olympus E1 and E3, combined with the excellent optics of the weather proof Zuiko professional lenses, has proved to be a superb mountain camera system - easy to use and capable of capturing the highest quality images. The Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter means that in all the time that I have used Olympus digital SLRs in the mountains, including changing lenses in and around helicopters, I have never been troubled by dust on the sensor.' Further details on the equipment that Nick uses are available here. |
