05 - Proning
The apparently simple manoeuvre of proning requires considerable care not to displace the endotracheal tube that attaches the patient to the ventilator or the many lines used for monitoring and to provide life preserving treatments. It is also important to ensure that a deeply sedated patient's limbs are not moved into abnormal positions that could cause damage to nerves or joints. Patients are generally cared for in the prone position for up to 16 hours a day during which time they will require regular slight changes in position to ensure pressure sores do not develop.
