10 - Donning personal protective equipment (PPE)
A doctor cuts holes in the wrist loops of his protective gown to keep it from riding up over his inner gloves. With reports of deaths of healthcare staff caring for COVID-19 patients coming out of China and Italy and so little precise information available about the behaviour of the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the start of the pandemic, the PPE used in ICU needed to be of a very high level including double-gloving with the outer gloves changed between every patient.
Despite the worldwide shortage of PPE, political controversies surrounding its provision in the UK and very real, and for the staff needing it, frightening, shortages of PPE in the health and social care sectors, PPE was always avaiable for the ICU staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital thanks to the efforts of colleagues behind the scenes ensuring its supply.
