15 - Sedative drug infusions
In addition to concerns about the supply of PPE and dialysis fluid the sheer volume of critically ill patients requiring intensive care across the UK resulted in shortages of many of the commonly used drugs including the vital sedatives and muscle relaxants necessary to faciliate mechanical ventilation. This necessitated unfamiliar combinations of drugs being used with the result that intensive care delirium, with patients profoundly confused and agitated, became exceedingly common in patients as they woke up from sedation.
