07 - Blood gas results
Staff Nurse Clare Greenstreet and Physiotherapist Bryony Hatchley discuss the results of an arterial blood gas test that provides important information on how patients are responding to treatment and is used to adjust the ventilator to patients' needs. Even simple tasks such as discussing blood test results became more difficult in PPE. Voices needed to be raised to be clearly heard through face masks and visors and against the general background noise of ICU.
Behind this seemilngly simple and routine event in ICU lies a deeper story. The blood gas result being discussed was from one of the sickest patients admitted early in the first wave and revealed that despite all efforts the patient's condition was deteriorating. Tragically, they died later that night.
