19 - A ventilated and proned patient
Mechanical ventilation is a double-edged sword: necessary to save a patient's life but also risking causing further damage to the lungs, a condition known as Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury (VILI). Intensive care ventilators are sophisticated machines that provide a constant feedback of how the patient's lungs are interacting with the ventilator permitting adjustments to minimise VILI as far as possible.
