13 - Family Communication
Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, Dr. Teresa Evans, organises a video call with a patient's family. With relatives unable to visit, this became an important way for awake patients to say in contact with their loved ones.
Communication with families is central to good intensive care medicine and in normal times takes place face to face. The challenges of communicating sensitive, and too often unwanted, news via a telephone in full PPE in which the voice had to be raised to be clearly heard, losing all nuance and with a lack of non-verbal communication, was one of the most emotionally draining aspects of the pandemic for ICU staff.
