02 - Beds between beds
The first patient was admitted to the Royal Gwent ICU on 9th March as contingency plans were rapidly being put into place to increase the number of available intensive care beds. One approach was to put extra beds between the already existing beds but less than three weeks later this surge capacity had been breached and patients were being ventilated in the operating theatres, on anaesthetic machines never designed to ventilate critically ill patients. Newport was hit with one of the highest infection rates in the UK outside of London. By the middle of April intensive care at the Royal Gwent was running at over 300% of its normal capacity.
